UPI PIN Guide: How to Change or Reset Your UPI PIN Safely

A forgotten UPI PIN can block a payment at the worst moment, while a known PIN may need replacement if it feels unsafe. NPCI supports both debit-card and Aadhaar-based face authentication methods, though app menus vary by bank. A UPI PIN is a 4-6 digit passcode that authorizes bank transactions via UPI. It differs from a bank-issued MPIN, and NPCI warns that customer support will never ask for it. A wrong PIN fails a transaction, and repeated errors can temporarily block UPI payments. A reset suits a forgotten code; a change suits a known code needing replacement. Both require careful checks. Open the official UPI app and select the linked bank account. Look for ‘Change UPI PIN’ under the bank account section. Enter the current PIN, then create a new 4-6 digit code and confirm it. NPCI’s June 2026 BHIM UPI guidelines show separate ‘Change’ and ‘Reset’ options. A strong PIN should avoid simple patterns, dates, or guessable numbers. The app does not store or read the PIN, and bank support never asks for it. A forgotten PIN needs a reset. NPCI’s current BHIM UPI guidance shows a reset path under the bank account section. The standard flow asks for debit card details (last six digits and expiry) followed by an OTP. After verification, you can enter a new UPI PIN. The exact route varies by app and bank; a debit card may not be the only option. NPCI introduced UIDAI Face Authentication as an extra option for UPI PIN set and reset. In eligible apps, choose ‘Aadhaar-based Face Authentication’ if Aadhaar is linked to the bank account. The app directs you to the UIDAI Face RD app for a face scan, followed by a bank OTP on the registered mobile. Then enter and confirm a new UPI PIN. This option does not replace older methods; bank and app support matters. NPCI also introduced on-device biometric authentication as an optional alternative to UPI PIN entry.

Never share your UPI PIN with anyone. No bank employee, support agent, caller, or remote-help operator needs it. Debit card details should go only into the trusted UPI or bank app, never into a form sent through an unknown link. A request for a PIN to receive money signals serious risk. Always check recipient name and amount before approving. NPCI states that UPI PIN entry belongs only on the UPI PIN page. A suspected PIN leak calls for a prompt change or reset through the official app. If your phone is lost, contact your bank and mobile operator immediately. NPCI provides a complaint route for UPI transaction issues via the app or member bank. A UPI PIN protects access to bank transactions, so a forgotten, exposed, or weak PIN can create serious payment risks. Knowing safe change and reset methods helps prevent fraud, protects account details, and ensures access to UPI payments without sharing sensitive information with strangers.
