Citi has expanded its ThankYou Rewards program by adding Japan Airlines as a new transfer partner. This development gives Citi cardholders more flexibility when redeeming points for travel to Japan and other destinations served by the airline. Japan Airlines, a member of the oneworld alliance, offers flights to major cities across Asia, including Tokyo, Osaka, and Seoul. With this partnership, Citi ThankYou points can be transferred directly to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, the airline’s loyalty program. The transfer ratio is 1:1, meaning 1,000 Citi points equal 1,000 Mileage Bank miles. Transfers are typically instantaneous, allowing for quick award bookings. This addition makes Citi the latest major credit card issuer to partner with Japan Airlines. Previously, American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy were among the few transferable currencies for Mileage Bank. Now, Citi ThankYou Rewards members have another valuable option for booking award flights on Japan Airlines and its partners.
Japan Airlines Mileage Bank miles can be redeemed for flights on Japan Airlines as well as on other oneworld alliance carriers, such as American Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific. This opens up a wide range of redemption possibilities for travelers. For example, a round-trip business class ticket from the U.S. to Japan typically requires around 100,000 Mileage Bank miles, though award availability can vary. Citi ThankYou Rewards points are earned through various Citi credit cards, including the Citi Premier® Card and the Citi Rewards+® Card. The program already partners with several airlines and hotels, such as Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Wyndham. Adding Japan Airlines enhances the program’s competitiveness, especially for travelers interested in visiting Asia. This new partnership is effective immediately, and cardholders can start transferring points now. As always, it’s advisable to check for award availability before transferring points, as transfers are irreversible.
